For their first semester project, students made a survey of people’s concerns about living in Detroit. Crime and violence was the biggest response. As a follow up project, students researched various solutions that address the root causes of crime and violence, and thus prevent crime and violence. They imagined these solutions expanded on a massive scale throughout the city, then built equations to estimate what the cost of this would be. They then compared these costs to the amount of money our society is already spending reacting to crime and violence through incarceration.
